How braided copper strip is made and what makes it so important

Cables are made using braided wires for two reasons mainly. The braids of conductors are helpful in screening the electric charge persisting in a metallic cavity. Electrical appliances and their parts don’t get affected by electrostatic forces generated by the flow of current in a conductor. This phenomenon is known as electrostatic screening.

Braiding also provides mechanical strength to the conductor. It also provides flexibility which is very important for metallic wires and strips. A braided wire could easily be stretched or bent without taking the risk of breaking or deforming it due to buckling and kinking permanently as in the case of metal tapes. The special designing of interweaving and crossing the wires allow all this to happen.

Braided wires are also used as a protective covering for cables as they protect cables from many external factors and unexpected accidents which may break the wire and cause serious accidents. They protect wire against high-temperature surfaces, the wire is safe from abrasions and cut that may occur. It also helps them to keep the rodents away. Cable harnesses are also made by braiding wires to ensure cables are grouped together.

How braided wires are made?

Firstly, copper metal is drawn into thin wires. Each wire is taken individually and braided with other wires in intricate patterns. Some of them are wrapped like spool at a very fast speed in circular designs at the center of the cross-section.

This method is applied to convolute the strands of wire together to form a braid that may be round. This kind of wire is known as Braided-only copper wire. The braid may be beaten later to turn it into a braided strip by using a press roller machine.

This braided copper strip is durable and strong like its round counterpart. It has the advantage of offering a wide surface area. Its resistance(R) is low and therefore, it has high conductivity. This increases the efficiency of the machine.

Large voltage fluctuations are easily handled by these types of copper wires. They are capable of withstanding and avoiding any short-circuits due to these fluctuations. They are used in making coaxial cables and enduring sophisticated electric circuits. They can absorb shocks that may occur in underground wiring.

Braided copper strips are used in radio equipment so that they may provide low resistance. Low resistance ensures receiving of maximum bands of radio frequencies. They are extensively used in commercial protection from lightning. These strips generate a minimal amount of heat to avoid any disasters.

Braided copper strips are no less than a boon for heavy engineering industries. Copper is full of surprises. It has surprised our ancestors and it doesn’t fail to make us awestruck today. A gift of nature to mankind!
