Global Copper Consumption – Official Facts

After iron and aluminium, copper ranks third in world consumption of metals for various usages. Based on a recent study by International Copper Study Group (ICSG), refined form of copper consumption was around 19.5 million tons in 2011. During 2005, 16.5 million tons of copper was consumed all over the world.

Due to the recession in construction and electronics market during 2008-2009, the global consumption of copper dropped to significant levels. Still, industrial and commercial copper consumption stood at 18 million tonnes during period 2008-2009.

Rising economies in Asia such as China, India and Japan lead the copper consumption growth globally. Sluggish American market, especially construction industry disappointed the trade analyst and market researchers. Even Europe didn’t show any signs of improvement in consumption. Globally, the copper wire consumption can be broken down as follows:

As per 2010 estimates:
China: 7.4 million tonnes or 38.5% of total global consumption
United States of America: 1.76 million tonnes or 9% of global consumption
Japan: 1 million tonnes or 5.5% of global consumption
Germany: 1.3 million tonnes or 6.8% of global consumption
South Korea: 828,000 tonnes or 4.3% of global consumption
