Tinned copper wires, best substitute for copper wires in marine areas


Tinned copper wire is a type of copper wire that is coated by a thin layer of tin i.e. why its name is tinned copper wire. The usual copper wires become less efficient in humidity or rainy climates and ultimately corrodes. Though simple copper wires are very economical to use, in conditions of high humidity they overall cost more as they have to replace more frequently. On the contrary, the tinned copper wires are costlier but last longer hence is a more economical choice. Copper is one of the highest electrical power generating elements and hence considered as the standard by which other electrical conductors can be judged. But the major problem with the copper wires is their oxidizing in humid climates. To overcome tinned copper wires came into rescue.


What is the exact problem scientifically? 

When bare copper wires are used in marine or similar environments with high levels of moisture they will be going to corrode over time. This happens because these bare copper wires develop a conspicuous oxide layer. The color of this oxide layer formed is of dark brown or black color. Especially in the saltwater this corrosion becomes more serious as there they form a layer of carbon carbonate which is observed as a blue or green colored coating. This layer of carbon carbonate is popularly known as “verdigris”. Both these carbon carbonates or oxidized layers or coatings formed over the copper wires make it very resistant and degrades its electrical conductivity. But this is not still the worst that could happen, sometimes due to capillary action moisture enters the fine conductor strands and corrodes it more at a drastic level. To avoid situations like these, bare copper wires are coated by a layer of tin. Tin is specially chosen as a coating element because it is highly resistant to moisture. It ensures that no oxidation takes place and not even in saline water and henceforth preserves its electrical performance. Therefore, tinned copper wires are a definite recommendation if you are also planning for a marine-based wiring project.  

How tinned copper wire composed and costs incurred?
A thin layer of tin is coated by dipping the copper in molten metal or by using electric current to bind tin to the copper. The tinned copper wire lasts up to 10 times longer than its counterpart. But there are cost disadvantages with tinned copper wires. The tinned copper wires cost 30 % more than their bare counterparts. The longevity that tinned copper wires provide recovers up the costs.
