Copper Alloys - Overview

Copper is denoted by the symbol Cu and carries atomic weight of 29. Having a strong thermal and electric conductivity, Copper is highly preferred for use in electrical and electronics industry. Some of the examples of its application include copper wire and tinsel copper wire, which are used in various industries such as electrical, marine, construction etc.

Besides this practical and commercial usage, there exists various alloys of copper as well. For example, Brass is a copper and zinc alloy, and called as copper tin alloys. It has several practical applications in different industries for best results. There exists a Gold-copper alloy which is used in Jewelry manufacturing. The resulting alloy can be easily modified for various properties. For example, the overall colour of the final product can be changed and hardness can be altered as the melting point of the allow changes.

The alloy of copper and nickel is called cupronickel. This is a very popular alloy and is practically used for several applications. Statuary coins are created with the help of cupronickel alloy. One of the famous usage of this alloy is the US 1 cent coin, which is called Nickel. It has 75% Copper and 25% Nickel and has a homogenous composition.
